Privacy policy

Last updated 18 October 2026

This policy explains what personal data Blackboard.lk collects when you use our website and apps, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We handle personal data in line with Sri Lanka's Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022.

What we collect

  • Account details: your name, email address, password (stored only as a secure hash) and, if you add it, your mobile number and profile photo. If you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address and profile photo from Google.
  • Learning activity: the courses and batches you join, lesson progress, quiz answers and marks, assignments you submit, questions you ask, reviews and live class attendance.
  • Payments: your orders, class fees, invoices and refunds. Card and bank details are entered on PayHere's secure page and never reach our servers.
  • Teachers: your profile, the content you upload, and the bank account details you give us for payouts.
  • Device data: a push notification token if you allow notifications in the app, and basic technical logs (IP address, browser or device type) that keep the service secure.

How we use it

  • To create and run your account and sign you in
  • To give you access to the courses, classes and fees you've paid for
  • To send messages you need, such as receipts, class reminders, answers to your questions and teacher announcements, by email, SMS or app notification
  • To pay teachers for their sales
  • To keep Blackboard secure, prevent fraud and fix problems
  • To meet our legal and accounting obligations

We don't sell your personal data and we don't show third-party advertising.

Who can see your data

  • Your teachers see your name, email address, progress, quiz and assignment results, attendance and fee status for their own courses and batches.
  • Other students see only your name and photo on reviews and questions you post.
  • Service providers that run parts of Blackboard for us, only for that purpose: PayHere (payments), Amazon Web Services (file storage), Notify.lk (SMS), our email provider, Zoom (live classes), Google (sign-in) and Expo (app notifications).
  • Authorities, when the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep your data while your account is open. When you delete your account we remove your name, email address, phone number, password and profile details straight away. We keep order and payment records for as long as tax and accounting law requires, without your contact details attached.

Your rights

You can see and update your details in Account settings, and delete your account there at any time. You can also ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or object to how we use it, by emailing [email protected]. You can turn off email, SMS and app notifications in your settings or your phone's settings.

Children

Blackboard is designed for students aged 13 and over. Students under 18 should use Blackboard with a parent or guardian's permission.

Cookies

We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in and to make the site work. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.

Security

All traffic to Blackboard is encrypted with HTTPS. Passwords are hashed, and access to personal data inside our team is limited to people who need it.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you by email or in the app.
